Worms!
A worm bin is a container that houses worms who are in charge of recycling food waste. The great thing about a worm bin is that it can be housed indoors or outdoors! This means that you can leave it out in the summer and bring it inside in the winter, or keep it in year-round if you don't have a yard. The container must be well ventilated, allow for drainage, and kept dark. It should be filled with moistened bedding (a combination of leaf litter, newspaper, and dirt works well) and red worms. As you add food waste, the worms and micro-organisms convert it into compost!

With the aid of the CSA Learning Center at Angelic Organics, Burpee Museum constructed a worm bin in July of 2004. Along with our standard compost, this bin not only helps to manage Burpee's food waste, but also serves as a valuable teaching tool for the education department.
