Grounds Gallery
There are amazing things to see inside AND outside Burpee Museum! We're fortunate to occupy such an amazing piece of Rockford and to have eco-minded staff members, volunteers, and community residents who help us to maintain a beautiful and exciting landscape.

In the summer our prairie is full of color. Look for coneflower, butterfly weed, asters and many others!

By late summer many of the flowers are gone,
but all kinds of seed pods have appeared.

We're working on introducing prairie plants into our parking lot. They are hardy, colorful, and easy to maintain.

Sunflowers!

distributing mulch

weeding

trimming branches for the brush fence

bagging yard waste

We're not the only ones who enjoy the Museum grounds! Squirrels, rabbits, birds, snakes, and many other animals share this habitat with us.

This red-tailed hawk has made many appearances on the Burpee grounds. On this day he sat patiently on a picnic table stalking his prey, scroll over the image to see what he caught!

Just a week later he was spotted again perched on the rooftop overlooking our prairie. What do you think he was watching? A group of sparrows chased him away before we found out.

When you come to the Burpee, keep your eyes open--you never know when he'll pop up again!
