Our goal is for your students to
have a positive experience at Burpee Museum. For some, this will be their first visit to any
museum, and we want this to be the first step in a lifetime of museum
exploration. Our tours and workshops are designed for the students to
interact with the museum educator and gain an appreciation for the natural
world.

Fossil and Dino Tour
Here are some suggestions of expectations for you to introduce
to your students before they arrive:
-
Please walk inside the Museum, don't run. There are sharp edges on
cases that could hurt!
-
Please stay with your Museum educator. We will try to
give you some time to explore on your own.
-
Please be a good listener when others are speaking, whether it
is the museum educator or another student.
-
Because we have structured tours, we have no requirement for
additional chaperones beyond the teacher. Parents are always welcome,
but please emphasize with them their importance as role models in being good
listeners. If parents would rather use this time to talk, we have a
vending machine lounge where they will be comfortable.
The backbone of any museum is the collection. Natural
history museums have mounted animals, minerals, fossils, and artifacts.
-
Encourage the children to bring to school their collections,
whether they are rock, leaves, or baseball cards. Have them set up a
display. Discuss how they organize and care for their treasures.
-
Ask the children to think about museums. What are they? What do they do? What different kinds of museums are there?
-
Introduce visual skills. Encourage your students to
study small things closely. Have them write a description of a pencil,
or a paper clipany ordinary item.
