Education: Scouts

We would be happy to give your troop a tour of any of our exhibits. We also design tours to fit individual needs. Have scouts who need service hours? We have many opportunities for volunteering in an exciting and educational environment!

Webelos: Geologist
Earn the Geologist Pin through hands-on activities in our Geo-Science exhibit. Discover different kinds of rocks. Learn what fossils are common in Illinois and discover the Illinois state fossil. $8/scout, one adult for every 5 scouts free, $3 for additional adults

December 11
6:30–8:30 pm

Junior Girl Scouts: Sky Search
The sky is filled with planets, stars, satellites and more. You will look "up" to learn about what is up there while earning your Sky Search badge. Some activities will be outside so please DRESS FOR THE WEATHER. $8/scout, one adult for every 5 scouts free, $3 for additional adults

Boy Scouts: Geology
The boys will earn their merit badge in this hands-on workshop. Bring a sack lunch. $12/scout, one adult for every 5 scouts free, $4 for additional adults

Brownies: Science Wonders Try-It
Be a scientist as you try some exciting hands-on experiments!
$6/Brownie, one adult for every 5 scouts free, $3 for additional adults

Boy Scout Sleepover: Indian Lore
Spend the night at Burpee Museum and learn about Native Americans of our area from a registered Boy Scout Indian Lore Merit Badge Counselor. See Native American artifacts from the Museum collection. Learn about the food, shelter and clothing of native people, and make a leather craft. Bring pajamas, sleeping bag, flashlight, toothbrush etc. Evening snack and continental breakfast included. Pre-registration and payment is required. Call 815-965-3433 ext 1020 to register. $22 per Scout, $20 per adult, one adult for every five scouts required.

Jr. Girl Scouts: Wildlife
Earn your Wildlife Badge by learning how plants and animals are adapted for living in habitats and eating certain foods. We will look for signs of wildlife on the museum grounds. We will be outside for a short period, so DRESS FOR THE WEATHER!

Webelos: Geologist
Earn the Webelos Geologist badge and have a great time exploring the GeoScience exhibit and discovering different kinds of rocks. Learn what fossils are common in Illinois and discover the Illinois State fossil. Try out the methods geologists use to identify minerals. Pre-registration and payment required. The boys will earn their merit badge as they learn about mammals through our exhibits and collections. One requirement will have to be done as homework before the session. Webelos: Forester
Using the variety of trees on the museum grounds and the beautiful woodwork in our older buildings, the boys will earn their Forester Pin. Dress to be outside part of the time. Boy Scout: Bird Study Session I
This is a two-session workshop.  The scouts need to participate in both sessions.  The first session will be at the Museum to learn identifying characteristics of birds.  The second session will be at a local natural area where we will be looking for birds.  There will be some homework required for this badge. Pre-registration and payment required
