Saturday, January 12th

“Solving Dinosaur Mysteries: Theropod Ballistics”

The clues are in the teeth of these fearsome beasts! Examine tooth casts from Tyrannosaurus rex, Allosaurus, Albertosaurus and other carnivores. Learn how these dinosaurs lived—and died! Take home a Tyrannosaurs rex tooth cast and lots of supplementary materials. Members: $13 per participant., Pubilc: $18 per participant

“Solving Dinosaur Mysteries: Hearts of the Tyrants”

Ever wonder what a dinosaur heart is like? Do you think dinosaurs are warm blooded or cold blooded?
Learn about the simliarities and differences of animal hearts? Learn to find your own heart and count the beats.
Get “hands on” as you dissect a heart. Need to be accompanied by an adult to assist with dissection.
Fee: Members: $15 per participant, Public: $20 per participant

“Solving Dinosaur Mysteries: Dinosaur Eggs?”

Burpee Museum’s newest dinosaur dig site is in the Morrison Formation of Utah, home of Brachiosaurus and Apatosaurus. Our expeditions regularly uncover the environment and items dinosaurs lived around. Might they find an egg? What mysteries do dinosaur eggs solve? What have paleontologists discovered from dinosaur nesting sites? Participants will build their own dinosaur nest with its own dinosaur eggs and take home lots of supplementary materials. Fee: members:$13 per participant, Public: $18 per participant

“Solving Dinosaur Mysteries: The Raptor Killing Machine”

How did Raptors differ from Jane, Burpee’s Theropod dinosaur, and Homer, Burpee’s Ceratopsian dinosaur?
Just how big were Raptor claws? Get up close as you study a Dromaeosuaurus skeleton and cast a claw to take home. Fee: Members: $13 per participant, Public: $18 per participant
Saturday,May 10th

“Fascinating Frogs”

What makes frogs special? Why are they important? What was the Age of Amphibians like?
Explore the ancient giant Amphibians found in Burpee’s Coal Forest. To discover how frogs are different from reptiles, participants will dissect a frog. Must accompanied by an adult to assist with dissection.
Fee: Members:$15 per participant, Public: $20 per participant

Home School Classes!

Burpee Home School Teacher Betsy Carlson

We are excited to announce our 2008 home school class schedule! We offer three classes each month with a common theme. Each class has its own focus, enabling students to come to one or all three of them.

We listend to your feedback and have changed the time of the classes to 2-4pm

Cost per 2-hour class (2008: ages 9-12 year olds)
Burpee Museum members: $12 for one child, $9 for each additional sibling
Non-members: $16 for one child, $13 for each additional sibling

Home School activities for 6-8 year olds. Activities and crafts are based on the same monthly themes as the classes for th older students. all classes are on Tuesday afternoons from 2-4pm and held at Burpee Museum.

Registration and pre-payment are required for all classes. Cancellations must be made at least one week prior to the class to receive a refund. Please plan on arriving 10 minutes before start time to allow for full class time. Burpee Museum reserves the right to cancel any class that does not meet enrollment requirements. Meet the teacher!
Besty Carlson is our Home School Program teacher. Betsy brings many years of varied teaching experience to Burpee Museum, including home schooling her own children, public school school instruction and home school cooperatives. Betsy is a dedicated and enthusiastic member of our Education staff.

 
Summer Camps
Hope you will join us this summer for a variety of learning experiences! At Burpee Museum, we offer drop-in programs to week long camps.
 
Animal Alphabet Camp
for 3-5 year olds
All classes meet from 9:30-11am

Pre-registration and pre-payment are required. Fees: $45 per child per week for members, $52 per week per hild for non-members. Call 815.965.3433 ext 1020 today to reserve your spot!
Each week, campers will learn about 5 animals through fun, age appropriate, activities and crafts as we work our way through the alphabet – come for a week or all summer!

This week our focus will be on Fox Snake, Grizzly Bear, Hedgehog, Insects and Jellyfish

This week our focus will be on Kangaroo, Lizard, Mouse, Narwhal and Owl.

School Age Camp-Homer the Triceratops
For 6 – 10 year olds
Meet Homer, Burpee’s new Triceratops, and discover what his world was like.  We’ll visit the Paleo-lab to see how Homer’s bones are prepared and use fossils to find out what else lived with him.

“Night at the (Burpee) Museum” Sleepover
For ages 6 and up, one adult required for every 3 children
Come and join the fun of a “night at the museum”!  We provide activities, a snack and movie at bedtime, and a light breakfast; you bring your PJ’s, toothbrush, pillow and sleeping bag.  Pre-registration and payment is required

School Age Camp – Paleo Explorers
For 8 – 13 year olds
Take a journey through time to discover the Earth of the past.  We’ll use fossils to guide us and discover lots of fantastic creatures along the way.

School Age Camp – Wild and Wonderful
For 7 – 12 year olds
We’ll explore habitats both inside and out, discover what lives in the river, and meet some really cool live animals.  Join us for a week of WILD fun!

Escape To Burpee:  Snakes Alive!
Get up close to a live snake.  Chart the growth of Burpee’s fox snakes “The Sisters”.  Examine a snake skeleton and discover the importance of snakes and how they fit into our ecosystems.

Escape To Burpee: Fishy Tails
Explore the world of fish, from Burpee’s ancient armored Dunkleosteous to Illinois’ own Blue Gill.  What makes fish unique?  Examine their scales and gills and make your own fish print.

Escape To Burpee:  Cool Off & Explore the Arctic
Escape to the cool world of snow and ice in the summer!  Examine the melting Polar Ice Cap and study the science of ice.  Make crafts of the Arctic indigenous people, the Inuit.

Escape To Burpee:  Volcanic Bombs and Rocks of Fire
Explore volcanic bombs, types of lava and igneous (“fire”) rocks.  Use microscopes, conduct experiments and begin and igneous rock collection.

Escape To Burpee:  Ice Age – Where Mammoths Once Trampled
Mammoth once walked here in Northern Illinois!  What evidence of the Ice Age exists here, what was it like and what still remains?

Escape To Burpee:  The Magic of Worms
“The worms crawl in; the worms crawl out” and what do they do when they are about?  Experiment with live worms to discover their secrets.

Escape To Burpee:  The Land Beneath Our Feet
Examine the strange and wonderful creatures that dwelt here in Rockford long, long ago in the Ordovician sea.  Who were the predators and who were the prey?  Make casts of ancient invertebrates.
