Project Clear is a hands-on experience
available from March through October for grades 6–12. The program gives
students the opportunity to evaluate the Rock River by collecting water
samples, river macro-invertebrates, and micro-invertebrates. Using the
riverside Aqua-Aerobic Systems Water Lab, students will identify and analyze
samples to determine the health of the river.
The program accommodates up to 60 middle
school students or 40 high school students. Middle school classes will
participate in activities 1 and 2 (see below) during a two and a half hour
session. High school classes will participate in activities 1 through 4

| Project Clear Program
Activities:
1. Chemical Testing
(middle school and high school)
Students collect water samples from the river which they test for oxygen,
pH, nitrates, phosphates, temperature, and turbidity. Results are recorded,
analyzed, and compared.
2. Macro-invertebrates (middle school
and high school)
Students collect, identify, and record benthic macro-invertebrates from the
river. The results are used to determine the Cumulative Quality Index Value
(CQIV), an indicator of the river's water quality.
3. Micro-organisms (high school)
Students collect samples using a plankton net. Numerous species of
micro-organisms residing in the river are observed and identified.
4. Bacteria Counts (high school)
Students perform tests to determine river bacteria counts for coliforms and E. coli in order to determine possible health hazards in the water.

minimum 15 students or $105
