Education : Burpee Explorers Fall 2011

Burpee Explorers is an exciting, fact-filled, activity-based Saturday program for 6 – 10 year olds, held once a month. This family workshop is for an adult working with one or two children. Participants must be accompanied by an adult. One adult is free.

Burpee Museum reserves the right to limit enrollments or cancel any class. Every effort will be made to notify registrants when a class is cancelled.

Ice on the Move – All about Glaciers

There may be ice in Illinois in December, but what if there were glaciers
here? Find out what makes a glacier and how they move by conducting
experiments to explore the special features of glacial ice. Includes time
in the travelling exhibit “Ice Age Mammals”. Make a jewelry pendant
using a glacial erratic rock from the local glacial till.
For ages 6-10, must be accompanied by an adult.

Monster Rats of the Ice Age - Giant Rodents

Discover the rodents that were part of the Ice Age habitats. Get up close to "Bucky," a giant beaver. Examine rodent teeth and investigate preserved rodents and make rodent teeth molds.
For ages 6-10, must be accompanied by an adult.

Mammoth Hearts . . . And Other Giant Ice Age Pumps

What made it possible for the giants of the Ice Age as well as the small animals to live in such cold? Make discoveries in the Ice Age exhibit. Take a close look at four chambered hearts to see how hearts of giant animals are similar and different from tiny animals. Dissect a pig heart with the help of University of Illinois medical students!
For ages 6-10, must be accompanied by an adult.

Strange Plants of the Ice Age

Visit the Ice Age exhibit to learn about the plants of that time. Learn about plants that lived at the edge of retreating glaciers, visit the herbarium of Burpee's Permanent Collection to see the pressed collection. Make your own flower press and press plants.
For ages 6-10, must be accompanied by an adult.

Ice Age Survivors: Creatures Still Among Us

Who are they? Visit the exhibit and view animals from Burpee's Permanent Collection to learn why these Ice Age residents are still alive today. Many survivors are of the order Artiodactyla (even-toed ungulates) - find out what makes them special. You will get your own hoof to examine.
For ages 6-10, must be accompanied by an adult.

Yes, there were amphibians and reptiles in the Ice Age! Meet live amphibians and reptiles to learn abou these "creepy crawlies." View their unique features and examine the structures of a frog to see how they survived the Ice Age. Learn what you can do to help amphibians survive today.
